What is Agentic Browsing & Why It Matters for Your Business

by Digital Surfer | Digital Marketing, Search Engine Optimisation

The way people interact with the internet is changing fast. First it was search engines, then social media, then voice search. Now, we're entering a new era where AI agents don't just answer questions. They browse the web on your behalf.

This shift is called agentic browsing, and it's already influencing how businesses need to think about their online presence. More importantly, Google has already started measuring it.

Here's what you need to know.

What is Agentic Browsing?

Agentic browsing is when AI tools autonomously navigate websites, click buttons, fill out forms, compare services and complete tasks without a human doing it manually.

Instead of someone Googling "best SEO agency in Brisbane" and clicking through results themselves, they might ask an AI assistant to find the best option for them. That AI will browse multiple websites, assess what it finds, and report back with a recommendation.

Tools like ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Google's AI Mode are already moving in this direction. As these tools become more capable, the websites that are easiest for AI agents to read, navigate and understand will have a significant advantage over those that aren't.

Why is Google Already Measuring Agentic Browsing?

In May 2026, Google released Lighthouse 13.3, which introduced a brand new audit category called Agentic Browsing. Lighthouse is the industry-standard tool used by developers and SEO specialists worldwide to measure website performance.

This new category scores your website on how well AI agents can browse and interact with it. The fact that Google has built this into Lighthouse tells us something important. This isn't a trend on the horizon. It's already being measured.

What Does the Agentic Browsing Audit Check?

The Lighthouse Agentic Browsing audit checks three key areas of your website.

Does your website have an llms.txt file?

An llms.txt file sits at your website's root (for example, yoursite.com.au/llms.txt) and acts as a guide for AI agents. It tells them who you are, what you do, and where to find the most important pages on your site.

Think of it like a sitemap, but written specifically for AI rather than search engines. Without one, or with a poorly structured one, AI agents have to work harder to understand your business and may miss key information entirely.

Is your page content stable as it loads?

Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) measures how much your page content moves around as it loads. For human visitors, this is annoying. For AI agents, it's a real problem. Agents identify elements on a page and then try to interact with them. If those elements shift position mid-load, the agent misses its target entirely.

Can AI agents read your accessibility tree?

AI agents don't see your website the way humans do. They rely on what's called the accessibility tree, which is a structured representation of your page's content and interactive elements. If your accessibility tree is poorly formed, with missing labels, broken roles or hidden elements, agents cannot properly understand or interact with your site.

How Do You Audit Your Website for Agentic Browsing?

You can check your own agentic browsing score in minutes using the same tool Google uses. Here's how.

First, make sure you have Node.js installed on your computer. Open your terminal and run:

node -v

If you see a version number, you're good to go. If not, download Node.js from nodejs.org.

Then run this command, replacing the URL with your own website:

npx lighthouse https://yourwebsite.com.au --view --only-categories=agentic-browsing

Lighthouse will audit your site and automatically open a detailed report in your browser showing your score and exactly what needs fixing.

How Do You Improve Your Agentic Browsing Score?

Fix your llms.txt file

An llms.txt file should have a clear H1 heading, a brief description of your business, and organised links to your most important pages including services, locations, case studies and blog posts. If you don't have one, create a plain text file following that structure and place it at your domain root. If you already have one, review it and remove any auto-generated entries that don't add meaningful context for AI agents.

Reduce Cumulative Layout Shift

To reduce layout shift, set explicit width and height dimensions on all images and videos. Avoid injecting content above existing page elements as the page loads, and make sure fonts or ads aren't causing content to jump around unexpectedly.

Improve your accessibility tree

Ensure all interactive elements on your site have clear labels. Use proper heading structure in logical order, add descriptive alt text to images, and avoid hiding content from the accessibility tree while keeping it visually interactive.

How Does Agentic Browsing Fit Into a Broader Digital Marketing Strategy?

Agentic browsing optimisation sits alongside LLM SEO, GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) and traditional SEO as part of a modern digital marketing strategy. They are not competing with each other. They are complementary.

Strong traditional SEO builds the authority and trust signals that AI tools draw on. A well-structured website with good accessibility helps AI agents navigate it. A clean llms.txt makes sure agents understand exactly what your business offers.

The businesses investing in all of these areas now will be the ones AI recommends when someone asks for the best in their industry.

Is Agentic Browsing Important Right Now?

Yes, and the window to act early is open right now. The Lighthouse audit category itself notes it is "still under development and subject to change," but the direction is clear. AI agents are becoming a meaningful source of web traffic and business referrals, and the web is being built to accommodate them.

The businesses that act now, before this becomes mainstream knowledge, will have a head start that is genuinely difficult to catch up to.
